Can I clean the fuel injectors?

I've got the fuel injectors out of the 72 280SEL, and BOY are they dirty! I had originally planned on just replacing them, but a friend of mine told me that it's possible to clean them. Is this so? And if yes, how does one go about it? Or am I better off just blowing the dough on a set of new ones. Of course, the day wouldn't be complete without one being broken, as seen in the pics. (The trashed one will obviously have to be replaced). By the way, all the corrosion is thanks to the MULTIPLE generations of mice and rats who made the top of the engine their home.

The blue/green (?) plastic is a heat shield....not a problem.
They are same injectors used on VW's of same years...Bosch used body plastic colours to identify them apart from the # numbers.
T3 VW's used them in the old D Tronic system.

I think KERR AUTOMOTVE will still have them in OKC, OK.

I Cleaned my K-Jet injectors

They were dirty and very clogged. After soaking them for a while in part cleaner I ran carb cleaner through them until they blew a decent spray pattern. What a difference. They car flew.

Im not sure how you can get these injectors to open up.

An ultrasonic cleaning machine will really get them clean - jewelry stores or jewelry repair shops usually have them. I"ve had them be so stunned by the request that they didn't charge anything. Shouldn't be much in any case.

ultrasonic

not a bad idea! and I've got one in the garage. What medium / solution should I use? I remember that my grandfather always cleaned carbs with diesel. Should I do that, or just use a bottle of FI cleaner?

I cleaned mine and they all came out good but a few still leaked. Used an entire can of carb cleaner and soaked them in it, then pulsed them on with a REMOTE power source (plugged in, switch was remote to avoid sparking at the injector). Got a lot of gunk out of the screens in them.

Try contacting this outfit. They advertise a rehab service for fuel injectors.
