The fuel injection pump may need adjusting. Its set with CO meters up the pipes to measure the mixture. Not sure if it can be home remedied too easily.

And be glad yer smoke aint blue! It's generally piston rings when gasoline engines push blue smoke.

Smoke on aceleration in a 6.3 means one thing, the MFI needs rebuilding.Do you have access to a bosche Diesel Specialist? .They can rebuild it for you ,average cost is around $1500 here. But there are two in the US who only do these gasoline pumps, one in San fransico and one in LA.
The problem is in the govenor section,it's not allowing the fuel rack to move in synch with the throttle ,often moving too far and thus too much fuel.An expert Diesel pump shop will be able to diagnose and repair the pump. |

Excellent info on Bosch Mechanical FI
Check out this link http://www.drivewerks.com/tech/bosch_MFI.htm which contains some of the best info on Bosch mechanical fuel injection. I agree with the suggestion on Gus. If your pump is bad and not working correctly you will be amazed at how much improvement you will experience with a good rebuild. I have a fair amount of experience with these system on older Porsche 911's and when they are exactly right they run super strong and smooth. Also, as you will read it is absolutely critical that the pump be timed correctly with respect to the engine. I had a 73 Porsche 911S that had an ignition wire jam the drive belt for the pump causing the belt to strip and also the pump to get out of time with the engine. No amount of adjustment could get the car to run right until I noticed this problem. Some people used to say that this didn't matter but that is BS. It is absolutely critical to correct function of the system. Getting a new rubber drive belt and getting the pump correctly timed to the engine put things right. Hope this helps.
