'71 280SE Fuel Evaporation unit in trunk

I have noticed the smell of fuel when I open my trunk. Further inspection found the fuel evaporation control system's "valve" removed and lying in the tire well. The line to the crankcase is also disconnected, but not sealed. The system now vents directly to the atmosphere, but only after it goes through the little tank in the trunk. I'm curious as to how other vintage owners have dealt w/ this system and whether it is worth repairing?

According to the Haynes manual, the system was installed in North American cars to reduce the discharge of fuel vapor directly into the atmosphere. It certainly sounds worthwhile if it works. Your advice is appreciated.

Do you have the ctrl valve? I am interested. I just wish I knew why it was bypassed in the first place. There seems to be very little to it. Thanks.

I have found everything but... to this point, tank, lines clips screws, but no valve. I know I have it ,just can't find it. If it shows up I will PM.
The good thing about my search is that I found I have lots of 114 115 parts and pieces and refreshed my mind as to their wherabouts
