It looks WAY too fake, no BG in almost any of those pics, and the pic of it with the top on and off are identical save the top - it looks more like pics of a model car than a real one. Anyone who spends that much on eBay is insane anyway!

Pebble Beach, it's expensive

It's a legitimate auction, through the Pebble Beach Foundation (associated with the Pebble Beach Concours) each year. They also have auctions at the Concours. Jay Leno was there when I visited several years ago, so was Phil Hill. Celebs do show up for this.

The photos DO evoke a model car image, but this is where the 100 point cars show up. If you ever get a chance to visit the Concours at Monterey, it's worth a visit. Almost as amazing as the Concours is the parking lot for the visitors cars! Even the ladyfolk can go shopping at nearby Carmel.

You can take the famous 17 mile drive along the coast, for a price. Everything is expensive there, the gasoline has long since passed $4.00 a gallon there.

This isn't your show and shine, or cruise night. This is the big time. You can see people with little brushes, cleaning the grass between the treads of the tires of the cars in the show.

i thought at first it was a model too, but if you click the pics up bigger it is clearly a real car.

the price seems high but if it has real ralley history maybe it is for real at that level. it will be interesting to see where it ends up.

i would definately give my left one for that. heaven knows i already have all the kids i need... but no 300sls.

The Concours

Isn't the Pebble Beach Concours tomorrow? I think so. I'd love to go sometime. It seems sort of like the Louvre for cars.

Yeah but is the 300SL really as fast as they say and can it do 140mph? Here's what one poster said here about this..... and i think it deserves repeating:

Anyone out there with a good memory?

A good friend of mine passed away a couple years ago, Jean Claude Martel. He was a driver at LeMans and in the Mille Miglia -- wow, he had quite a life and I really miss visiting and talking with him. (Aside: He knew Levegh and was present at the 55 crash at Lemans.)

In the 1950s he was living in the NY/NJ area and the importer of Mercedes Gullwings at the time (Hoffman?) had a potential customer who simply did not believe the claimed top speed. Jean was contacted and he took the car out for a demo ride on the recently finished NJ Turnpike. He told me that the TP in those early days did not have much traffic because people resented the tolls -- anyway, it was fairly clear of cars.

He took the Silver Arrow the length of the TP in 45 minutes (I believe that's correct) and generated a state-wide police alert because none of the patrol cars could even come close to him. A sea of police cars with flashing lights greeted him at the end of his journey. I believe he said his knowledge of spoken English spontaneously lapsed, yielding French, and he pulled out his FIA licence for the officers.

I was told that this episode made the front page of the NY Times but I have not been able to locate the date. I did confirm the story with another racer who was in the area at the time. Does anyone here remember this and the approximate date?

(edit by 240Dog: New Jersey Turnpike I think is about 108 miles long and this race car driver Jean Claude Martel drove it in 45 minutes.

bid123sold is a legitimate auctioneer. They sell vehicles for the Meadowbrook Concours as well. Generally people don't just bid on those level vehicles. Ebay is more advertisement then an auction. I wouldn't be surprised if he sold it to one of the bidders in person.

Those photos are professional, not cheaply done amateur. They is why they look so "fake". They were taken in a studio.

Reserve not met

I see the reserve was not met at $975,000.00. I guess it's just as well I didn't get mine in on time. . . .

Anything that has Bob Platz' (Precision Autoworks in New Jersey) name on it is going to be as legitimate as it gets, close to perfect, and very expensive. If you see "optically straight," in the description, that's a Platz trademark.

A couple of Pagodas that he was involved with were also at Meadowbrook.
