Rear Wheel Bearing

Does anybody know how to change a rear whell bearing of a 1976 300D? Do you need special tools, is it hard, can I do it myself?

are you sure it is the bearing?

a more common problem is the cv joints, in which case a new or rebuilt half shaft is in order.

perhpas if you are not 100% sure you could describe the symptoms you are chasing.

Rear Wheel Bearing or CV Joint?

Tom W,

When the problem started, the car had a low rumbling and the tire was shaky. Yesterday, it would run but it won't move.

that sounds like a failed half shaft or cv joint to me.

a bad bearing wouldnt stop the car from moving.

Half shaft

Tom W,

First, I really appreciate your help, this car is still not my expertise. Is there a way to tell if it is a half shaft vs. a cv joint? Is it a hard job, is it costly? I can fix it myself once I know what the problem is. I've never had a car that has lasted as long as this one to know about this problem. It's a great car and I would like to put several thousand miles on it if I can!

Thanks,
Dennis

She got the mine but you got the shaft.

Dennis,

The Constant Velocity joint is part of the half shaft. It usually costs more to replace the CV joint (machine shop labor) than it does to buy a rebuilt half shaft.

You would only replace the CV joints (do both of them) if you could not locate a rebuilt half shaft.

Even Autozone has the rebuilt half shafts. Lifetime warranty for under $100 a shaft.

not a job for a beginner, but not too hard i dont think

In service records of my 123 left side axle was replaced by PO for $235 including parts. Not sure, but i think 114/115 have near identical rear ends. Doesnt say for sure, but could be less than 2 hrs shop labor.
