Soft brakes in 250SE
Patient is a '67 250SE coupe (4 wheel discs).
It had been stored for a number of years and is just now being brought back to life. Initially out of storage (and after a good flush and bleeding), the brakes felt pretty decent, then suddenly got very very soft... they would stop the car, but at a liesurely pace. Additionally, they would have a noticeable effect on the engine idle along with a continuous "whoosing" sound... so I suspected that the booster was gone. I replaced the booster with a "known good" used unit... it still makes somewhat of a continuous whoosing sound, but nothing like before and without having any effect on the engine.... kind of like how you would expect it to sound if the master were slowly leaking by. So I replaced the master cylinder with a new one... and carefully bled the system. But to no avail as it's performing exactly the same now... enough brakes to drive the car conservatively, but nothing like "good" brakes. It stops fairly straight (though not perfectly straight) making me think that I do have brakes working on all 4 wheels, but maybe not quite evenly... Thoughts? Thanks!! Bill Elliott |

Small cylindrical plastic one-way air valve not doing its job in the vacuum hose?

How do I best test that?
Just remove and apply pressure/vacuum? Thanks! Bill |

Yeah if it was me I'd try blowing through the line with my mouth and try sucking air back through to see if its working. It oughta allow air flow in one direction only.

You never mentioned checking the pads to see if they were down to the clips.
