Suggestions on price?

Hello all,
I'm normally in the diesel side, but I was asked by a good friend to give him my thoughts of the value of an older 240:

It's Mike here, finally getting back to you about the Mercedes. I went to look at it yesterday and can give you a pretty good account. It is a 1968 Model 250, vin. 1140101200xxxx, color beige. The body is almost cherry, with a tiny ding on one side. It has the emblems and all the original upholstery, and has cool old Double Eagle whitewalls (god knows how roadworthy they are!) Hank put a Ford 302 engine in it, which runs, but played around with the front end, so the steering has a huge turning radius. The orignial upholstery is aged, but intact, meaning it looks weathered, as it has been outside.
I'm really not sure where to start with a suggestion of price on this, but I'm thinking fairly low as it has a transplanted engine...

Thoughts?
-nB

Only as much as someone is willing to pay. It comes down to if you like the car. You will get opinions from 50 bucks and a dead cat and up.

The resale value of the car will hinge HIGHLY on what was done to the front suspension.
If the subframe was changed to fit the Ford in it, then it will really lower the value. It sounds like he completely modified the stock steering. MANY people have spare engines they could pop into it to bring it back to stock for purists sake - or tune up the existing engine - or even put in a different one (like a SB chevy), but if the subframe or suspension were modified and it'd cost money to bring those back, then the resale value is pretty much "What a Ford fan would be willing to pay to have a Ford that looks like an MB".

I understand, but his job is a fiduciary(sp?) and he is obligated to get a "fair" value for the car without also taking a lot of his time, which he has to bill for, thus reducing the return on the car. I was thinking of suggesting to him that he list it at $500 and take as little as $250 on a first offer...

Sound at least reasonable?

I would look at what he would want for just the engine, and compare that to what he would want for just the body. Ask the higher figure.

then again, asking 500 and taking 250 sounds about right too
