450SL shift problem

I got my '76 450SL engine to run and now I need help on my '77 450SL (doesn't everyone have 2 SL's?). This is a good one BUT the 2-3 upshift will not occur until the system is thoroughly warmed up. I know my SubaruXT had a "thermal switch" in the transmission to lock out 3-4 upshift when cold. Once warm the '77 works fine. If the transmission must come out will a newer 4-speed auto work or is it sacrilege to consider this?

The 4-speed auto (from an aluminum-block V8) won't swap directly on because the bellhousing is much bigger on the cast block. I would TRY to adapt it if I were you, though. MAYBE the bellhousings can be swapped? I have never heard of this done.

If your 1-2 upshift is also very delayed, it could be that your kickdown switch has a short in it.

The symptoms you have are classic stuck valves, governor or valve body. To service the governor the tail must be removed.

This is what I would do if the car was my shop, check the level and condition of the fluid if clean with no burnt smell; I would drive it until it reaches operating temperature, then do a road test to check for any slippage, kick down up shifts and down shifts. If the transmission performs to my satisfaction, I would flush it and add a friction modifier/cleaner, Lube Guard.

Don’t believe the Flush misinformation in cyber space, most of it is BS, if a transmission fails after a flush it would have fail with out one.
