squealing noise from steering wheel

i have a 300SEL V8 1970....well, sometimes when i do some tricky maneuvering (ex. move steering wheel sharp right...going slow) a very loud low pitched squealing noise comes out from it seems like the wheels...maybe under the hood...definitely from the front of the car though...any ideas what it might be?

thanks any help appreciated

It's a "Groan" most commonly associated with low fluid in the PS reservoir. Top it off with either PS fluid or ATF (whichever is currently in there).

The PS reservoir is the one that says "Nur Automatic Transmission Fluid" in yellow text on the top.

I take it you don't have the owner's manual?

Normally it's ATF if the fluid hasn't been replaced since delivery of the vehicle. Red = ATF, clear/brownish = PS fluid.
