1966 200D Heckflosse
Looked at one today. White with Black MB tex. Interior very good, only damage was rear window seal has leaked and damaged rear hood liner where it meets the rear wind shield. Present owner has reworked all the brakes, an all rubber fuel lines have been replaced. Paint job not bad minimum surface and underbody rust
Car has around 100,000 miles original om621 engine which started right up with no smoke first blast of the glow plugs, without either or block heater. Has a block heater. Fan did not work that I could tell, did not test it. Are these fans a bear to fix? Only one light worked when flashers were on. Original Becker still works all gauges work except clock. Trunk load of parts. Owner is replacing the clutch piston so I could not drive it yet. Car has some minor rust but underneath looks solid. Trunk is dry. Guy wants 3K for it. Knowing my 123 chassis diesels (daily driver) I see money pit. My wife sees is an idiot...mmmmm should I could this be my next daily driver? If i was good enough to go down the road in 1966 it is good enough to go down the road in 2006 The question I have is how robust are those diesels of that vintage? Will synthetic oil and routine valve adjustments help me through the 40 to 50K a year I put on a car? Tom |

I would not get a Heckflosse as a daily driver.
A toy, a hobby maybe... but putting such a classic under daily drive use would not be wise.

1966 200D Heckflosse
I drive a 1979 240 daily on every interstate in the Northeast from Maine to DC. 30 to 50 K miles per year. Did it with my 1977 300D as well which I just sold.
I have gotten used to the bird flipping and pee bombs I have had thrown at me. If it was good enough to go down the road in 1979, it is good enough to go down the road now. Same goes for the 1966 200D Heckflosse. These diesels are not pieces of furniture, to not run them is the crime. My 2 cents Tom |

Sounds like you have an answer already. If you can handle the driving route with its power to weight ratio, drive it!
Those things are just so dang loud though. |

Wear earplugs. My 220b w111 sounded like an oil drum when it resonated at idle and certian RPMs. My w115 240D does the same thing. It gets really loud at 70-75MPH wind noise (made worse by bad door seals) and a screaming boat motor... I would not do much highway driving in a 200D, it has what 47HP? I'd move to an '85 300D or TD for that kind of driving you do. '85 beacuse it has the tallest rearend so that you can cruise at 70-80 all day long without the motor screaming.
