Looking for hard brake lines - 280SE
Hi all, I'm looking for the front brake lines for a 1973 280SE 4.5. Not the rubber lines, but the metal lines that connect right to the calipers. I've looked in all the Mercedes parts warehouses online and the part is not even listed. Any idea where I can find it?
Thanks alot, Aaron PS - sorry if this is in the wrong section, feel free to move it if it is. |

You can buy a roll of the pipe, and the end fittings you need at your local parts supply store and make up the pipes yourself. You need a brake pipe flaring tool and some kind of cutter to cut the pipe. I have used a dremel type cutting wheel in the past.
I've done the job many times in the past, and its fairly easy.

Thanks, I actually went to Autozone but they didn't have the female fitting (the one that connects to the flexible hose), I might call some other places too see if they have it, that's not a bad idea.
My first choice would be to get the original piece if it's still made though, I just can't find it! Thanks again, Aaron |

I had to replace one of mine. There is line sold at most auto parts stores (I went to one around here, local place called "Franconi") and you just match the length and the thread size/type for the ends and that's it. The line is not flexible per se, but can be bent any way needed into position that would match the original line. I had to do it on the left rear on my 4.5 and it worked perfectly. Bent to the exact original routing.

you mean that nice short pipe with the blob on it that gets bolted to the steering knuckle? That's a specialty item. Though if you call phil here at the parts shop he might well have it.
Oh, and when it comes to the hard lines that eminate from the master cylinder, the autoshops have basic steel stuff. The lines that come from mercedes have a dark green anti-corrosion coating. They only cost a bit more, but they're soooo worth it. -CTH |
