1973 280sel 4.5: the little things...
Hey guys,
I am used to working on Datsuns with low horsepower engines. My new 4.5l V8 is a BIG step up for me. I was curious as to how these engines would react to similar upgrades like I would do to lower horsepower engines. Things I was thinking about would be: 1.) Removing belt driven fan in exchange for an electric one. 2.) Removing the AC belt, and the weight of all of the AC equipment. 3.) Decarbonizing the engine with Seafoam 4.) Cleaning corrosion off electronical connections Just stuff like that. O, and can anyone give me a link to a store that I can buy all new wires, rotor and cap? Thank you very much. Sam |

Decarbonizing the engine with Seafoam
What's involved with that? is there a chance it could damage anything?

I run my 280 with an aftermarket electric fan. Mind you, it is the M110 (6 cylinder) with no problems even here in the summertime. I run my shop truck, 5.0L GM, FULLY loaded (air compressor, big tool boxes, spare tires, oil tank, lots of extra parts) with just an electric fan also.
You MUST have a shroud! It really made a difference on my Benz. Nice and quiet at an idle and I'd swear it made it smoother at in-town speeds. I don't hold to any of their MPG increase claims. Don't remove the A\C. Switch over to a Sanden style compressor. When it's engaged you'll never even notice it with that 4.5. |

awesome, thanks
Thats good news to hear that you guys have switched over to electric fans. All of these things I questioned have given me small horsepower gains, and a moderate horsepower gain in conjunction with one another. Again, that was all on my 105 horsepower datsun 4 cylinder. I would believe that the "smoothness" in around town speeds MAY have resulted in the engine not having to run the fan. I'd still love to hear anyone elses experience with these products.

decarbonization
You can read all about seafoam on the internet, but basically it does everything. I used it on ALL of my datsuns and was extremely pleased with every experience. The only harm that this could cause to an engine is if there is an extreme amount of buildup in your engine that is essentially holding your engine together, then seafoam would clear all of that out.
