Sad yet comical thread

It’s hysterical and gets more and more ludicrous as you read on. The part about breaking down on the way to get a six pack and abandoning the car in a Chucky Cheese parking lot is almost to good to be true.
Thanks for the laughs!

Maybe we're too serious on this Forum. We are always so respectful and try to solve problems. Maybe we ought to go the tough love route like they do on that board?

Sceptic
I'm still wondering if this is a real problem or a joke thread. There's just too much comedy in it.

I hold the title for setting the guy off apparently mostly because I am so unreasonable!
That is actually the second thread on his whine-fest. I am flabbergasted(sp?) about how somoene could complain about metric tools. And who can honestly compare a W116 to Detroit made cars of the same era?! |

Americentricity--not a new problem
True story: A high school buddy's dad was a Big Three senior engineer in the latter 1960's. MB was starting to make a little more noise in the US and Detroit was interested in what they were doing in their product. He and four other similar types picked up a Benz to analyze. They were driving from Saginaw to Ann Arbor when the rain started. They spent over an hour under an overpass in Flint, trying to figure out how to turn the windshield wipers on....

The thing that worries me, is that this guy might actually be reproducing.
Then again, people like that keep the economy going by spending money on correcting stupid decisions.

I can relate to the finding the windshield switch. I drove a '73 BMW 2002 for about three days wondering why the stupid S.O.B.s in Germany shipped a car to the US with no turn signals. 'course I felt pretty stupid when I realized that lever on the RIGHT hand side of the steering wheel was not for "tilt wheel".
The bad part about driving the Beemer was I also had a column shift automatic Buick. After I got used to the turn signals on the Beemer every time I was in the Buick and I signaled to make a right turn, I'd pull down the shift lever into low gear! I never made the mistake doing a left turn thank goodness! Last edited by Mike D; 11-23-2006 at 10:05 AM. |

Just goes to show where the mentality was/is with some car mfg's. I don't get it - what better advice could the folks there give other than say "There is no conversion kit" and tell him that the costs would be ridiculous? He'd have to cannabalize another known-good 116. A RHD to LHD "Conversion" is not worthwhile, and he can't see the forest for the trees.

Dan, agree fully with the second point, but P. T. Barnum gave us the rule that would help evaluate the first one. (OK, for you scholars in the crowd, it was actually David Hannum who said it.
