1977 230 Gasser

Can anyone tell me their experience with a 123 chassis 4 cylinder gasser please. I am looking at one and all I have owned are 123 diesels.

Regards Tom

That an M115 four cylinder motor? Simple and effective, basic motor. The rest of the car is identical to your diesels. -CTH

The carburated 230 isn't a very fuel efficient engine, you'll wish it was a diesel if you drive it a lot. AC will also add to the load that makes it use more fuel.

If its a stick shift it won't be nearly as bad and will have a surprising amount of pep for a 4 banger but the engine will be revved up pretty high at 65 MPH and swapping a 3.07 differential into the rearend will drop the engine speed at the loss of some acceleration, but only do that if its a stick shift.

Otherwise an interesting car. If you get it I suggest replacing the points with one from a later 230E (solid state) or a Pertronix or similar points conversion to improve reliability and prevent the need for so many frequent tuneups. The late W123 230E's used fuel injection. I missed the opportunity to buy one in Texas, it was a stick shift. I can't remember if it was a 5 speed or not probably not or I would have flown out there to get it! Heck I've got a W115 model 220 with a 230 engine transplant. I use it for therapy, it makes me appreciate the diesels. I'm happy I don't drive a 230 every day

Depends on how you are going to drive it. The 4cyl. is not the best performer, but certainly is bombproof or nearly so, and easy to work on. Daily driver around town - good, daily driver - interstates -bad

one thing about the 230, it likes to be warmed up thoroughly before it will drive and idle right. In PA with the cold weather you get you would like a block heater on it just like a diesel, but it would warm up faster once it was running than a diesel so in the deep of winter I suppose I would take a gasser over a diesel. I had a hard time starting a 300TD in W Texas when it was about 15 degrees one blustery morning. And my hydro shocks in the SLS blew oil out from a cold seal. A few hours later the neutral sensing switch went intermittent. It was not a fun trip!
