I'm glad I finally found the active forum. I have mine on the road but, am experiencing the same hesitations you and chuck have been documenting. Fun reading BTW. I have a gasket kit on order so I can take things apart and clean them up. I only have 86,000 miles so it shouldn't be worn out. Is all this worth the trouble or should I seek a Weber 32/36 setup?

The zeniths aren't any better or worse than other carbs.
What makes life interesting for people is that there are two of them. A webber setup will cost you more money than paying a professional to rebuild your zeniths for you. Also, I hope you have TWO gasket sets on order. Also, be sure to get two accelerator pumps. Also, are you sure they need to be rebuilt, not just sync'd? -CTH |

I found the Webers were very easy to run and maintain on the old BMWs. I'm fairly sure there not sync'd, but the car has sat for most of the last 6 years, and it stumbles horribly through the full range. I hope to get some time to poke around them tommorrow.

I'm told that if you don't have a unisyn, the next best thing is a pair of vacuum gauges. Or at least, that's how you do it on a bike. A little bit of TLC goes a long way.

I once spent the better part of an afternoon trying to straighten out a 250C that had been alledgedly sync'd on vacuum. I would not recommend it - it really should be done on air flow.
You will probably find Karo syrup in the fuel chamber and jets and various orfices. Give everything a good long soak in carb cleaner. Good luck!

I just bought one mail order from Baum Tools. You also need to get the adapter for the Zeniths. Total was about 70 bucks. You can find some other sources on googol.com with a search on "carburetor synchronizers".

I am not familar with your Solex carbs but I use a Uni-Sync on my 190SL. It is available from Moss Motors (1-805-681-3400 or http://www.mossmotors.com) Item # 386-200 for $29.95. Works good for me.

Yep its named for you...The forum we crossed on was the mbnz.org forum (although I still go to the BMW forum at bimmer.org out of habit some great people there also) when your troubles were thought to be ignition and were just starting to play with the carbs.
I'm glad we found a forum thats active with folks who love to tinker with the old iron. (I hate reading about upholstery stains in Bob's ML) This place has already helped my learning curve. Cheers, Mark |

I got my flowmeter from - hold on - JC Whitney. Cost $24.95 and it's made in Germany. As for the adaptor for the Zeniths to use with this meter go to your local Wally World, Kmart, Big Value, etc and get a Rubbermaid 1.7 US PT/.8L "Servin Saver" (Part number 3053). Throw away the cover and cut a hole in the bottom (which now will become the top) to allow the flow meter to fit about half way up the rubber cone. Seal the OUTSIDE around the cone with silicone sealer. Walla - you now have a useable flow meter with an adaptor that will fit both the Zeniths and Webbers if you get the complete Webber kit with the Zenith tops.
My total cost was about $35.00 including shipping for the meter. Works just fine for me. Dan

I like your thinking Dan, fits right into my tight fisted plans too! Besides, I have to put an order in for a high level brake light, can you believe I can't find and LED version here? JC Whitney has one that fits onto the window with 2 way tape. (no screws) Cars of this vintage mounted their tail lights way too low.
