That is a car that's probably worth more than my house, and I have a nice house.

Maybe a Riley? It looks British and from the 30's.

No, it's a Benz, hence the star on the bonnet.

Body styling says 1930's, but the picture isn't clear enough to show what that hood ornament really is. Looks vaguely like a star but judging from the grille the car is NOT a Mercedes Benz from that period, see pictures for comparison at

Looks to me it could be a water temp meter that some British cars had as a radiator cap in those days. You could see while driving what the radiator temp was. Car looks British (note that it is RHD too).

It's a Saoutchik-bodied Benz from late twenties/early thirties. I have pics of that car but I forget where they came from, some Pebble Beach event or similar I suspect. Here's a similar car:

Ok, I spoke too soon. The fluted radiator gives it a way as a Daimler, albeit a very unusually bodied Double Six:
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b79/evermod/Cars/DaimlerDbl6.jpg But still very similar in appearance to the vehicle I originally thought it was: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b79/evermod/Cars/SckMerc.jpg Previous posters are correct in that it's definitely not a Merc and the supposed star mascot is a trick of light on the moto-meter radiator cap. |

It has a very unusual grille for a Mercedes of the period. That and the British plate threw me off.

These were hand built cars. Believe it or not, an alternative to the MB grill was an option as were the ridgelines running down the middle of flared fenders. I'll betcha the hood scoops were a custom option too. See the 540K thread and you will see two completely different 540k Spezial Cabriolets. The AZ auction car has a custom raked and sloped front grill unlike the stock MB grill. And it's got custom elephant ear rear fenders. Amazing by contemporary standards - imagine telling an auto company today that you want custom coachwork options to the original sheet metal.

that car has a kindof purposeful look...almost brutal.
it is aesthetically kindof akin to a colt 45 service semi automatic. tom w

It should be understood that most expensive vehicles of the period where sold as a chassis only (including the manufacturers radiator and shell) with the bodies being built to order by a third party coachbuilder. Depending on how much one spent the resulting car could look like anything the buyer desired, which could entail replacement of a chassis builder's trademark details (like a radiator shell). However, as riethoven pointed out, the car in the pic is a Daimler Double Six:
http://www.supercars.net/cars/3534.html But yes, it is proportioned rather like a Mercedes SS. |

Beautiful Car! There is a place in Corona, California I visited last year called MARCEL CUSTOM METAL that builds custom car bodies and panels the old way using english wheels, etc. If you took them a chassis, some photos, and a bucket of money they could duplicate that car for you. They were actually finishing up a roadster body to fit on a viper chassis that was a cross between an XK120 and a Delahaye. They said they had 1000 hours into it at $65.00/ hour.It was beautiful! Their number is 951 371 2290. They can also duplicate damaged or rusted out panels if money is not an issue.
