111/107 daytrip knob and speedo glass removal
OK, I need to remove the glass from my 111 280SE/c 3.5 because I have a fogged up speedo and a bezel that need to be glued back on the speedo needle.
My big question is: how do I get the knob off the daytrip counter shaft that is protruding through the glass? I can open up the back, but cannot remove the speedo/odometer assemby because the knob is blocking any removal. I read a bunch of old posts, but most dealt with 108 and 114 type speedos which have the daytrip adjuster in the rear/bottom and not through the glass. What's the trick? Speedo glass
I would recommend that you take it to a reputable speedo repair service. They can easily repair the speedo without harming the chrome.

Also, as far as I could see, you can remove the entire speedo assembly from the rear without having to mess with the chrome ring, provided you can get that knob off that is sticking through the glass. Thanks, Bert '70 111 280SE/c 3.5 (4 spd) + MGs |

For what it is worth, here is the answer to my own question: you cannot remove the knob without removing the glass first. After I carefully removed the chrome ring, the glass with knob came off. The knob slides onto a shaft and is attached using a spring clip to the back of glass. No way you can get the spring clip off without removing the glass first.
I fixed the infamous slipping pot metal gear wheel using a center punch to casue some deformation. FYI, I found excellent instructions on: http://www.drivewerks.com/tech/mult_gauge_repair.htm I had done a repair like this on my old 250C, but the center punch trick listed at the bottom really did the trick for the 111 odometer. Much cheaper than a $35 replacement gear wheel. But PATIENCE is definitely required. My chrome ring is undamaged but I took 30 minutes to get it off (very slowly). All I have left is to glue the bezel back on the speedo needle (fell off a while ago), put it back together, and I should have a working Euro 240 kph speedo again for my car. Bert
