I have 72 SE 4.5 that I bought new. It has 8900 (that's 89 hundred) miles on it. Never in snow, ice, salt etc & only twice in the rain. Has always been garaged (heated) since I brought it home.Still has paper wrappings on the sun visors & paper on the floors. The problem is, it hasn't been run or started since 1984. I want to recondition it & start using it.The brake goes to the floor, I know the fluid leaked out of the hydropneumatic compensator,& I know all fluids, ?belts, the injectors cleaned or replaced, the gas tank cleaned, air cond. serviced, cooling system flushed etc. I,d like some input as to ballpark $$ on getting this car fully reliable & if its worth it. The body, paint interior etc are like brand new.
Thanks in advance for any input Tom |

Tom,
To get it running, start by replacing the oil and the gas and getting the fuel system cleaned. All the rubber bits in the fuel system probably need replacing. Before turning the key, the valve covers and plugs should come out. All internal motor surfaces will need a coating of lubricant and then the motor gets hand cranked a few turns to spread it around. If you're paying somebody else to do this, it will cost you a few hundred dollars. Be prepared for the starter to not work. Also, have a fire extinguisher handy. It's cheap insurance against trouble. Also, it wouldn't hurt to blow out all the dust from the engine compartment before starting ANY of the above work. -CTH PS. You sure you wouldn't rather just verify that it runs and then sell it on ebay? The car has value now, and it won't be as near valuable once you start to drive it. |

what direction to go?
Thanks much cth350 for the info. Unfortunately I will have to have either an independent tech or a MB dealership do the work. I dont't know which way to go with this. I'm in the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton area of Pennsylvania. I'd appreciate any leads or suggestions.
Thanks in advance Tom |

72 SE 4.5
TriStarPete--
If I get some idea of what it may take from either a MB dealer (my local dealer, Knopf in Allentown wasn't interested) or an independent tech,a decision will be made. I'll contact you here if I decide to sell. Tom |
