The only timing of that pump is when the pump is installed. Actually you might call that pump alignment instead of timing.

Most likely cause of black smoke is a bad injection pump thermostat.

Tons of information on this problem and other MFI issues on the Pagoda web site:

Also, beware of oil dilution with gas if you are running rich.

Before fooling with the MFI pump, check the Cold Start Valve [ CSV] on the intake. They are known for leaking by at the seat and this will cause rich running. There should only be gas coming out of the CSV when the starter circuit is energized and coolant temps are low. If it leaks while running , that is the cause for rich running condition and no pump adjustments will correct it.
A simple CSV test is to remove the test port plug on the side of the CSV [ a 7mm hex-head plug] when key is in the run position. [ electric pump running].
There should be no fuel coming out the test port..if there is , you know the CSV is leaking by..usually held open due to dirt...
...also possibly held open electrically due to bad/stuck relay contacts or shorted TTS switch..simple test for that is to remove wire at CSV..[ or check for voltage w/test lamp]...... if fuel is still coming out of port when wire is disconnected, the problem is mechanical. not electrical ...most CSV leakage is mechanical [ dirt]
