Check out this rusty coupe for $12400

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=017&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=270092518294&rd=1

Non running, no sunroof, column shift, no radio(very rare radio) trashed interior. But a very nice air cleaner.

California car? A car that old with white plates??? I think the rust tells the story. I love the peeling paint thick as bondo!
I bet the next time that car shows up on ebay it will be a convertible!

And I thought California cars NEVER rust!
A year ago, I could have bought a rusty, but running, SE Coupe, with a trashed interior, locally for $2000.

Ridiculous price, but good for those of us who have a 3.5 coupe. Must have been quite some "celebrity" who owned it. Did he drive it in the surf every day or so?

the coupes of that era are getting pricey but this one is too far gone to be worth bringing back. before i saw the detailed photos i was thinking maybe it would be fun to drive as is but the rust is too extensive!

i had a chance at one of these locally a few years back. they were asking $13,000 i think and i thought it was only worth 8k and couldn't get together. it was a nice unrestored car with (i thought ) minor running issues.

I don't think this is worth to bring back either (at least not for that price), but a lot of cars that are restored in Europe look worse than this, and I would not be surprised if some European is bidding on it because it is close to a port for shipping. On both my MGs I had to replace the complete sills/castle rails (inner + outer), full floors and front fenders, plus a door skin here and there. And that is a typical MG bodywork restoration over there. We are talking about 30+ year old cars after all.

Look around at what people do to restore Citroen Deux Chevaux (aka 2CV). Complete replacement of body pans/chassis and major chunks of the body shell are commonplace. Talk about spending more than the car will ever be worth...

200 series coupes are really expensive here in SoCal.
a rust free SE will sell for as much as $25+K
I'm not saying it's worth it but people are paying that much.

but in england you can buy the parts to do the mg or others.

here at least you can't really buy all the parts to do a coupe like that can you?

and i think perhaps there are more skilled men in little shops than there are left here.

But still a bargain compared to recent crazy prices for some American muscle cars.

MG sheet metal parts were and still are cheap (new fenders and complete sills used to be $150 each, etc) compared to MB panels when I restored mine . I know that most sheet metal panels are available for the coupes, but have not testes it by actually ordering some. DBDepot lists 111 coupe floors for about Euro 160 each, sills for Euro 350 , and complete chassis rails (the rear ones that always rust in the bottom corner) for Euro 525. A trunk floor is Euro 204. The panels that rust out under the spare wheel are about Euro 100. A complete rear outer fender is Euro 1100 or 1400 depending on side. Inner fenders are Euor 225. MB used to have the front fenders for about Euro 1800.

Now, it adds up pretty fast if you have to do all that, but with these "rust free" prices (that still may need a paint job anyway - which can also run several thousands), it starts paying off to buy a MIG welder and learn welding skills - if you are a DIYer. Otherwise, forget it, restorations by commercial 3d parties are always more expensive than the final car, in my opinion.
