sloppy shifter on my 1966 w111 coupe
I've got my 1966 250se coupe running finally! we just replaced all the brake stuff.. the car had been sitting for a long time. (last inspection sticker was from 1988) We ended up swapping the engine out actually.
now, I have to deal with two things.. (well more than 2 really...) the shifter is extremely sloppy. the car has a manual trans, with a floor mounted shifter. the problem feels a lot like the old "vulkolon ring" problem I had with my 1961 220s, only it's on the floor instead of the steering column. does anyone have a diagram of how this fits together or part numbers ( or suitable replacements) ? the next issue seems to be a sagging butt- I'm guessing I'll need new shocks, but I'm wondering what other rear suspension parts I ought to refresh? It looks Like I'm missing most of a boot to something ( I cant get the car up on a lift right now)... once that is all done, I'll be looking for a pair of w11 coupe fenders and a rear bumper. anybody got some? thanks everyone! -M |

be prepared for that rear bumper to cost you about 300$ for really nice one. You might get lucky and find one for half that. Each front fender will cost you the same if not more.
On the rear sag, look at the rear to see if you have the hydropneumatic compensator or a spring holding the two sides of the swing axle together. That's a likely candidate for replacement. There are a couple of plastic bushes that hold the shifter together. You can easily take it apart from inside the car and reassemble it with the correct parts for under 10$. Call Rusty. He'll know what to send you. -CTH |

Shift rod bushings
You would be lucky to get a coupe bumper for $300. Make sure it's not a sedan bumper before you buy. A well known Mercedes recycler tried to sell me a sedan rear bumper that was on a 111 coupe.
The sagging rear would not be shocks as they don't support the load. It might be a collapsed compensator on the rear axle. Not sure if your year had a spring or hydro-compensator. The shift rod bushings (3 at trans and 3 at shifter) are nylon and are probably worn out as mine were also. You can get replacements from MB. Hope this helps.

hey, thanks for the info! it looks like the dealer wants $1300 for a hydraulic compensator! I've seen the spring replacement for about $200.. and it supposed to be a direct swap? hm! I ordered up some bushings though. cool.
My next problem is that the new motor seems to idle REALLY high! like 2k rpm. I'm new to this engine, at least the fuel injected version, so I do not know all the various ways to adjust the idle speed. I see several stop screws on the throttle linkage, but they all look like they are in pretty normal positions. disconnecting the pedal linkage seems to make no difference ( I had a car with a stickly gad pedal once) .. any ideas or suggestions? where might I look? |

You should be able to get the compensator spring for way less that $200.
Try Autoparts brothers or Autohauz Arizona. http://www.***************/ http://www.autopartsbrothers.com/ It's $152 at Autopartsbrothers
