Unhappy Fuel Pump Failure...help!!

my 1968 280 SE recently started leaking gas. my hubby and I thought we would try and fix this on our own. it never occured to us to look for a rebuild kit and we went with making a gasket. unfortunately, while my husband was dissassembling the pump, a tiny piece of it fell out unnoticed. It was a blown seal causing the gas leak. he made the gasket, put it back in the car and no gas was pumped. did stop leaking though. we could hear the pump working as well. since my husband remembered the fan falling out, he thought maybe he'd put it back in upside down so he pulled it back out. we then found the missing metal piece that fits with the fan onto the pump. after realizing that this was a three handed job, we got the piece back in. it slid in like a puzzle and we thought we had success! we put it back into the car and then we got nothing. after several attempts to start the car my husband noticed that the pump was getting warm. took the pump back off again and found that the fan had locked up. there were also tiny metal shavings around the fan. we kind of figured we just blew the pump completely, but since I don't have a spare $800 laying around to replace it, I'd like to attempt rebuilding it. The fan moves now. Get the kit with new brushes and seals or realize we broke a perfectly good fuel pump?

Another alternative is to pick up a pump from a CIS car, like a 500sel and use that instead. Works like a charm, but looks totally wrong. -CTH

Would I need to get a converter or regulator of any sort?

using a CIS pump is OK because the fuel circuit is unregulated for pressure. The old MFI systems are looking for fuel volume. The CIS pump provides ample volume for the task.

Having said that, if you can get a used pump from Chuck, go that route.
