Long Way From Parts
I have a '77 450SL, about 98K miles. On the passenger side of the engine, there was a pipe that ran from the timing chain tensioner to the diverter valve with a check valve on it before going into the diverter. I am in the process of replacing the air pump and need to find that pipe and a check valve. Right now, it looks like someone cut the pipe off, and blocked off the hole into the side of the block. I want to get this done before I start trying to figure out if I have a timing chain & rail problem. It looks like this has something to do with the timing chain tensioner pressure. Does this make sense to anyone....I think I need to find a couple of parts. I am in western Nebraska, I can't even find a wrecked 450SL to look at! Anyone have either help or an idea on this?? Maybe a place to get some used parts??Thanks.

Hey. It's not to often I run into other people from Nebraska here...
I'm in Omaha and can't find junk yard cars or used parts and there's an all-foreign auto parts junk yard is here. You may have better luck calling a mechanic or someone that knows alot about these cars in particular. |

Parts you need
Nebraska450sl.........Go to slforum......Look up free engine and tranny (from DRM261) and "PM" or reply to see if he would be willing to sell you these parts. I would think a 1978 and 1977 would match. Hope this helps Dave

Thanks for all the help, I'll take the suggestions and get to the SL forum. Obviously, I'm new to this. Thanks again all.

It's my understanding that this valve diverts oxygen into the exhaust gases to enhance complete combustion. My pump is not on there and the car runs O.K. Milt.

The airpump, related tubing, check-valve and diverter-valve (sometimes caled an 'anti-backfire valve') should have no connection to or anything to do with the timing chain and tensioner. Unless your area requires it for safety or emissions inspection, you may be OK just leaving the fitting plugged.
Happy Motoring, Mark
