M103 Coil in a M116?
This seemed totally illogical at first. Then....
In ruling out some of the surging issues on my 3.5 V8 M116 it's been suggested that I swap out the coil to see if it's the culprit. I thought I had an old V8 coil lying around, but it seems to be gone. Is there any reason not to try teh coil from my M103 300E daily driver? I see the part #s are different (no surprise there), but voltage different enough to not work in the older, point-system V8? Feel free to tell me that I'm totally nuts . I don't offend easily, I promise.

On a points system, its not a good idea. The more modern coil doesn't like having voltage applied for any length of time. The electronic ignition on the modern car only switches the coil when the engine is turning, where as on points, the coil is switched on as soon as the ignition is on (so long as the points are closed!)
I did have intermittant surging at mid to high RPM's on a M117, which turned out to be the coil. It was almost as if a rev limiter cut in at around 3800, then it would really struggle to rev any higher.

That was more or less my understanding of modern coils. Just needed confirmation.
Thanks. -M-
