220Sb Fuel System Questions (filter, return line)

So I have finally had a chance to look at the fuel system on my '64 220Sb and realized a couple of things...mine has the dual Zenith carburetors, BTW.

The first odd thing is that apparently my fuel system has no fuel return line (it's been plugged at the tank and at the carb). I've done some reading and apparently the fuel return was used to prevent vapor lock in high operating temp conditions during prolonged idle (which my car was probably never subject to being from temperate northern California). So perhaps the return started leaking and the PO or his tech just decided to eliminate it...OK, I can live with that for now.

The other thing I am scratching my head about is the lack of a fuel filter...I can't find any filter on the system between the tank and the carburetors. Was there any fuel system filter on the 220Sb? If so, where was it located? The shop manual is rather obtuse when it comes to the fuel system on the carbureted models, and never specifies a filter or location that I can see. It does show one on the MFI models but not on the carbed ones...but still I cannot imagine they made a car with no replaceable fuel filter at all???

Thanks, so that's the only filter? Is it supposed to be replaced or just checked and cleaned?

It is to be cleaned..
There were several changes on the pumps and carbs for that vintage.
Most guys put an in-line filter between the pump and the carbs..many also convert to electric pumps ..
See if the tank has a hex screen ..I don;t think so, but it may

Thanks again, I will probably put an inline filter in mine too just for extra protection. I'll check the tank and pump later and see what's what.

Hi all,
I have a 1963 220b Mercedes that I would like to sell. It runs great!! and it only has 82k. Do any of you know of a good site to post this type of car?
I think the car is worth about $6500. I'm willing to let it go for $4500.
Thanks

It's supposed to have a filter between the fuel pump and the pipe on the chassis. Mine doesn't but I'm going to put one in.

Try the "cars for sale" section on this site...be sure to include lots of details, especially where the car is located.

Perhaps Mercedes didn't want to call attention to the fact that they stopped installing a separate fuel filter on their carbed cars.
My '61 Ponton 180b and early Fintails, like my '60 220S, had a small fuel-filter canister mounted on the inner fender, near the fuel pump. It's a paper cartridge, under a metal can, secured by a wing-nut.
This was eliminated on the later cars. On those, I usually install an in-line filter in the hose between the fuel-pump and chassis fuel line.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Yeah, in my EPC research I did notice that they cutoff using that filter around chassis number 50,000 so that's why I was wondering what came after that? Apparently nothing! Hard to belive they would rely on a screen in the pump to filter the fuel but I guess they did. Oh well, I will add an inline filter to my list of little projects I guess.
