Screaming starter

I have a 73 280C with a nice new engine but now the starter screams at me like it's not engaging. I don't feel the engine turn over but if I try to start it again it works fine. It did, however, do this five times in a row a few weeks ago and then twice in a row the other day. In typical Mercedes fashion there is no recognizable pattern to this problem at all. I am worried that one day soon it's not going to start at all. I think its the solenoid but no one I know can come to a consensus. Can't solenoids be repaired? The starter motor works fine.

Another thing I've been considering is swaping the alternator for one that actually produces a usable amount of power. Can I get one from a new Mercedes (they all fit) making about 150amps and not fry my electrical system? I've got this awesome new stereo that I'm afraid is slowly draining my battery. Thanks for your help.

Put the car on a lift. Pull the inspection plate for the torque converter. Check to see if the ring gear is slipping on the flex plate. Turn the engine over and check for bad teeth on the ring gear.

If the above checks out okay, then it's pull the starter time.
