We have a 1969 220 with dual solex carbs (look to be original and in poor condition). Does anyone have a good source for new or rebuilt units? I looked on this web site but didn't find any. Are there carburetors still on the market or are we looking at a rebuild? Do Holly or Weber make retro fits?

Any help much appreciated!

Thank You

I have an elderly lady friend who still drives her 1960 220S. Over the last sevral years she's been told by a few 'mechanics' that she needs new carbs when all she actually needed was a fuel line or jet-holder tightened or some other adjusment. Unless the carbs are REALLY bad- (Been parked in the woods for years or under water) and if the car is still running, I'd recommend repairing / rebuilding them. I've heard of Webers availible as replacements for the Solex carbs, priced in the $500 to $1000 range. I've also heard about problems with adapting the Webers to fit Mercedes
(trouble with throttle linkages and not fiting the original air filter unit)
Good Luck, Mark DiSilvestro

You can upgrade to either zeniths or webers.
The originals are rebuildable. The kit is out there.

Granted, the work hasn't come up recently here, but check the archives here and at http://www.mercedes-veterans.com. Pretty much all you'll need docs-wise is the "starting 1959..." service manual. Go for a paperback copy. There's one on ebay as we speak.

Upgrade to Zeniths ... now there's a contradiction in terms.

Couple of other thoughts. On the Ponton page: http://www.geocities.com/mbzponton/index.htm there's a Solex rebuild article I stumbled on looking for the transmission article for the above query.

Also, Glenn's Mercedes Benz guide has a section on rebuilding it, and lots of other "stuff" for your car. You can usually find a copy on ebay, and I think Amazon.com still sells it.
