Help me fix my cigarette lighter....please?
I drive a 76' 240D, 115.17 chassis. Does anyone know anything about fixing the cigarette lighter in this car. The actual insert is brand new, and all the wiring appears to be hooked up. Just no heat.
Thanks T |

Take a voltmeter and attach one end to the center contact in the socket, and the other to a metal ground point on the body. Check for 12 volts (you may have to turn the key on). If you do not have voltage, then you do not have power going to the socket and you should check the wire going to the socket and the fuse. If you have voltage, then take the gound end and touch the side of the socket. You should again have 12 volts. If you have voltage at the center, but none when grounding to the side of the socket, then the ground to the socket is bad and you should check the wiring on that side. If you have good voltage and good ground, than I would say you might have the wrong insert.

Lighter is switched power
Key needs to be on for the lighter to work.

And if someone's been inside the console or installed an aftermarket radio or some other electrical accessory, it's not unusual to find the lighter wiring disconnected, or switched to power the new unit.

What KCM said was spot on.
If you have a dremel-type tool, you can clean contacts quick and easy (and if you don't, you really ought to get one). My cigarette lighter doesn't work for the reason Mark said: the PO had an aftermarket radio installed, and they "stole" the 12 volt connection on the lighter. Since I don't need to hook up any gizmos, I'm fine with it. The only time I need my lighter is when I inflate the tires; then I use a thingy I bought at Harbor Freight which has battery clips on one end of a 10' cord and a female lighter plug-in on the other.

Sometimes there's nothing more irritating than P O-installed 'improvements'.
If one needs to tap into an extra circuit, like the lighter, to power an aftermarket radio, it's not that hard to rig up an adapter so there's still power to both the lighter AND the radio. The P O's kid had installed an amp, monster-speakers and and CD-radio in my '82 240D. Of course the lighter and CD-radio were both DOA when I bought the car, and the amp and monster-speakers were gone. The emergency kit on the rear shelf was gone too as he had drilled holes in the bin and used the space as the junction-box for his monster-speaker cables! I installed a working radio, and reconnected original speaker wiring and fader, but don't relish having to to pull the center console if I want to fix the lighter. Happy Motoring, Mark
