W116 w/jumpy fuel gauge

The fuel gauge in my '73 450sel has a bad habit of giving randomly inaccurate readings whenever I get close to 1/4 tank, I'm thinking flakey grounds but where are the usual places to check?

you will need to pull the sending unit and clean out the rust flakes that are inside the unit. There is a small hole at the top of the unit that a straw from a brake parts cleaner can will fit.

Also- if you dont have a new cork gasket you may want to get one before trying to pull the unit. The old one will stick.

I saw a visual on cleaning out the sending unit, might be in the DIY
section. take the nut off the bottom while cleaning it out and you
will be surprised with the amount of gunk that comes out. be careful
of the wires inside.

There is certainly a lot of gunk (algae) that fouls the diesel senders, but I was unaware that the gassers sometimes had problems. Be careful with those wires inside.

it also could be a bad dash ground....but if that other electrically operated guages would be jumpy too, which would not include the oil pressure and i am not sure about the water temp.
