Hubcap Horror!
So this morning, after yesterday's rains, I was hosing off the latest deposit of tree-droppings and compost from my 240D, and when I sprayed my left-front hubcap, big chunks of paint came off! So I figured, no paint looks is better than some paint, so continued spraying the hubcap and removed the rest of the paint. Only the left front hubcap had this problem. Obviously it was a poorly-painted replacement.
I'm already NOT looking forward to masking off my hubcap star in order to attempt a repaint. Is there a way to properly prep the bare chrome, or a certain repaint procedure that is more durable than what I had, or is the factory hubcap paint something that mere mortals like us can't duplicate? Am I better off looking for another OE matching hubcap? (There's also that set of W107 bundt rims I got from Chuck) Happy Motoring, Mark

Mark,
Contact Rusty @ BuyMBparts. A while back he had these ingenious stencil kits to mask the hubcap for painting. Very simple and effective. Otherwise find a paintshop with the factory stencil tool.

Send me a picture with the color. I have two color yellow spare hubcaps. If I have one the right color and you ship yours to me with a postage paid return i would trade you.

This is the one I have. The other color yellow one must have been one I selected to repaint. It is the light ivory and needs a good cleaning.

Years back, the dealers carried the stencil for painting the hubcap because the replacement cap was not painted.
I think some carefully used Scotch Brite would give a good tooth for paint. |

I agree, a shot of primer could not hurt also.

skuff the original paint and paint it.
if you have a cap with the original color original paint just skuff and paint it. and your masking wont have to be perfect as the edges will be the same color as the new paint. i have some that color listed for sale btw. tom w

A light coat of scuffing in the paint area as mentioned is a good thing, and on bare metal you would want to use a precoat, preferably the self etching type such as Dupont Variprime, not primer, which is actually more of a blemish filler paint intended for covering over filler or over paint. On galvanized surfaces, treating with vinegar is a way to get the metal ready, but with chrome it's a different animal, treat it just as plain bare metal.

I painted my hubcaps over ten years ago and they still look fine. I used paint remover to take all of the old paint off and then I sprayed them with Rust Oleum. Didn't do any scuffing, sanding or special prep work at all. I was lucky, because the two colors I needed matched the Rust Oleum white and almond exactly.

The proper way to assure paint adhesion to polished stainless or chrome is to use an etching primer as the first coat, followed by your color coat. The etching primer contains a small amount of acid the bites into the metal. Certainly scuffing the area works, but may be impractical for lettering or other fine detail areas.

I sanded mine then primer and then paint. I masked them , it took about 1/2 a cap, I used the green automotive tape and then used a razor blade to get it just right, I think mine look as good as new, now sure how long they will last
