Basically the rule is this: The black plates can be used indefinately, so long as the car is regularly and continuously registered in California.

When Ron puts up his ad, using the words "California black plate car" automatically tells classic car buyers the car has been basically a California car for all its life, and that assures them it has lived in a mild climate with no rust, salt or rot. Brings more money for him.

See: www.calpl8s.com for history and information on them

HUGE selling point. Search "Califronia Black Plate" variations on ebay for examples.

thanks gang, I will post picts when I get them, I understand he was quite a fan of the RR. It was serviced last week at a Rolls dealer for the trip here, Just under $300 for oil lube filter and "a going over" Egads, I am glad I am just the middle man. But I really can't wait to drive it. And I have a nice new bottle of Grey Poupon

well she has made it, and what a ride, a little more tired than I thought she would be but very proud. Took her out for 50 miles or so and the ride is quite amazing, tranny needs work and the AC is weak , but she runs strong and turned a lot of heads.
Going to do some homework and put her on the market, if you know anyone looking for a nice 65 Silver Cloud, let me know!

I don't care if she's a little tired, or needs some work. As long as the Hull, is sound, Barnacle free, Anchor works, Engine room is in decent overall shape, and she's Coast Guard certified as being "Sea Worthy" that's all my major concerns are..She's a fine, and as you said, proud old lady.

Nah, I'm too young for that car. Maybe in 25 years or so, when I slow down a bit. That car would get destroyed if I drove it the way I drive evrything else I've ever owned. It couldn't handle my relentless abuse, and live to talk about it. That's why I stick to Mercedes and a select few others for the time being..

This 560 SEC, AMG, EURO is more my type of car. It holds up to almost anything I dish out at it..Very fast, Hard turns, 1st gear starts, from a light with my foot burried in it. No problem for her. I find her sometimes begging for more when I lay into her. I think she misses the Audobahn, and other European roads a lot...LOL

Thanks anyways though...Nick

What about auctioning it?

I think if you bring it to a Barrett-Jackson or Kruse, which has an auction in Little Rock, Ar on Sept 28, you can get top dollar for the car. You should also put a color ad in Hemming's...
Sliver Cloud III seem to be in the 70~90krange... Good luck!

Well, it will definately cost you big to try and put it in Barret Jackson's auction. May I suggest "Auburn Auction"? It's a lot closer to home for you also, because it is located in Auburn, Indiana. I've been to it several times, and bought and sold cars there. They also publish a nice magazine, with color pics of all of the available vehicles for the upcoming auction. Many specialty car dealers use this catalog, and it is worth you while to buy or sell with them.

I have heard that you have to "apply" to have your car in BJ, as only the absolute "best of the best" run through there, and get the real serious money for them there.

Kruse I think is much the same (but I am not sure...)

Man, that is high. I remember passing this classic car dealer on the road to Beaulieu, UK, from Dover many, many years ago (uhh, make that 20). He had a nice brown two-tone '50s RR for sale for 8,000 pound asking price. Never regretted I did not buy it, but still regret passing on those two Jaguar XK 150s I was offered for free in Glasgow that same year...

Good luck with the Rolls. It'll suck up money if you're not carefull!

Bert

Auburn in the fall is the biggest auto auction in the world. I have been going almost every year for over twenty years. I don't have the cojones to buy anything there but I love to go look at the cars.

Hey Trucky, you could probably use another winter beater....I hear a rolls is very good in snow!

I am going to look into this Auburn deal, I really want to sell it "as is" and now that I have been driving it feel I can represent it pretty well. My guess to get it to "show quality" is conservative at $10,000 ( includes paint) concours twice that. So I think I am going to start the asking price on craigslist at 35-45K range. I really do not know so will just have to test waters. I plan to formally advertise in some other venues as well. I can't forget that it does have some history that might make it more collectable being it was owned by the late David Janssen
