Distributor cap scoring? 1973 450SL

My wife was driving the Mercedes and it started missing so I pulled the cap and noticed pitting and scoring of the dist cap so I bought another and the new cap started ok, but was missing so I pulled the new cap and it was scored too; how can this happen is the problem in the shaft assy. Any insight will be appreciated. I made sure the cap was seated properly.
