1972 280se ac

I am trying to have my ac repaired on my 72 280se 4.5. I was told that the compressor needed to be replaced and I have received quotes of 1300 to 2800 dollars parts and labor. They said the compressor cost was anywhere between 750 and a 1000 dollars.I found one at Pelican parts for 180 for the compressor and clutch.Do these prices seem about right for this kind of repair

sounds damned expensive to me. I paid $1200 to have my AC converted to R134a, the compressor replaced, and a vacuum actuator or two replaced in my 300D.

What kind of compressor?

I would expect you to have either a York or a gneric GM frigidaire on that vintage MB. Either way, they are not high dollar compressors as your research indicates.

Yorks can be tricky to convert, as their fill ports are integrated into the compressor connections.

I'm thinking the 4.5s used GM, as my 76 450SL had a Frigidaire. My 71 250C with the M130 has a York, as did all my 220Ds.

Dude, your being taken for a ride. Check the www.partsamerica.com site for prices. A rebuilt on can be had for less then $200. It's an under dash unit so labor should not be expensive.
