Rebuild setback - cracked distributor housing (see pic)

In the process of putting on the head I cracked the distributor housing while tightening the bolt down (see picture - crack runs just below the blue line).

I can't move it any so I'm wondering if I can still use it??? What do you guys think? If not, anyone know where I can find a replacement?

It should work, there's little force on the part. I remember a spacer going under the hold down boss.

A spacer - like a washer? That may be my problem, I kept tightening it to try and draw up the gap...

Not sure I know where it is though...

I was going to say that a spacer must have been missing. '

since you have it off you probably should just find a shop with a heli arc welder and get it repaired.

Then install it with the spacer in there. The purpose of the spacer is to keep from jamming the main shaft down into the tube so that it won't adjust properly.

Good luck.

I've seen a few distributor sockets cracked because that spacer was left out. It's about 1/8, 3-4mm thick.
As Tom mentioned, it's out and the crack is fresh so it shouldn't be too hard to weld it.

I doubt you'll "find" a washer that will fit into the recess in the block.
It's an uncommon size and so typically Benz. A piece of 1/4" brake line carefully parted off with a hacksaw will do. Unless you have access to a lathe.

You might find a AN washer to fit but I sometimes have luck with the copper sealing washer set I got from JC Whitney when I come across a special size like that.

If you have a few days for shipping, go to www.mcmaster.com and type "round shims" (sans quotes) in the find products search field.

Here's a link. Check the 3rd panel down, it shows a space and a washer.
