6.9 Transmission Engagement Delay
I have been driving my 6.9 recently and I have been encountering some transmission engagement delays when not having started the car for 8 hours or so and or in the mornings after it's cooled down.
Nothing happens at startup in the morning when it goes into reverse or drive. It just revs freely. After a minute or two then the transmission will quickly engage and have no problems or it will stutter for about 15 seconds and then engage and it will be fine with no flaring or slipping until the car is shut down. What's going on? |

low on fluid or sticking valve.. Try some of that trans tune and change the fluid & filter after about 1000 miles

Also, several 6.9s have a special hydraulic pump on the engine that looks and acts like the A/C idler pulley. If that pump is flaky rather wierd things happen.

Why are you selling yours?
I checked the fluid level and it's fine and not burnt either. |

I have 5 cars and not enough garage space. Need to thin the heard as they say. I have a 914-8 race car that will be coming home soon so that will take some room (it is one of the 5). I love driving the 6.9, never expected it would be so much fun. Mine is light blue and I was never really hot on that color, but when I was looking to buy (1999) there were very few 6.9's for sale. I have a 6.3 and I want to put some miles on it since I am trying to raise my $/mile ratio ($ don't go down...so miles must go up!) I need to get off my butt and sell it, I have the ad written, there are a couple of cosmetics with the car I want to take care of first. I'll hate to see it go, but I know I will get another one someday. Maybe red or black....

What's a 914-8? I presume a 914 with a 8 cylinder shoehorned in there? Do you plan to race it?
Speaking of cost per mile, I just filled up the 6.9 today after only a week and the pump stopped at $75.00! Cost per mile $0.289. The diesel comes in at $0.0275. Over ten times as much. Staggering. |

I wasn't even factoring fuel costs... (and its premium, at least the 6.9 is regular) just what I spent on repairs. When I bought the 6.3 there was a head gasket leaking oil, but the PO had sealed it with some type of caulk. Took a while to discover it. The bad part was that one of the head bolts was rusted.....All fixed now.
The 914-8 is a Porsche 914 with a Chevy 327 in it. A common conversion. Hard to imagine a 5.5L V8 can fit where a 2L 4 cyl resided. I need to find a diesel.

Not sure where I could race it, PCA is out, maybe SCCA but thats for guys who like new bodywork. I'll probably do drivers ed events on PCA track weekends and drive around on the street making lots of noise....

I have seen the 914's with the SBC conversions on Ebay, I thought those were one off projects but I guess it reinvents the cars since they are able to be converted. 4 speed manual tranny?
It's safe to the 6.9 on 87 octane gas? |

The 6.9 only needs 87 octane according to the manual.
There are 2 companies that make chevy conversions. The Subies are popular these days.
