replacing the AC compressor on a 1980 450sl
The AC compressor makes grinding noises. When I disconnect a wire from the dryer, thus disable the entire air conditioning system, the noise goes away. I have serviced the system with R-134a and the noise diminishes but it is still audible. The clutch assembly is cracked and I'm relatively certain this is at least contributory to the noise. How do I access the compressor to change it when I can hardly touch it! I'm of course resolved that it must come out from the bottom. Must the radiator be removed? Any special tools required? Does anyone have experience changing a compressor on a 450sl?

According to AllData, the radiator has to be removed. It sounds like a terrible job, especially if you don't have a lift. The compressor and the carrier come out together. Since the compressor is US-made, many of the bolts are inch-sizes.
The book time to replace the clutch is 6.7 hours, plus 1.4 hours for AC service.

compressor replacement
Hi,
Be sure to flush your system and replace the rec/dryer. When a compressor fails it puts all kinds of debris in the system. Tony
