Angry head twisted off bolt to tranny pan

I accidentally twisted the head off of one of the bolts to my transmission pan. How can I get the rest of the bolt out of the hole?

If there is not enough sticking out to get a vice grip on then you could usa a cutting wheel to cut a slot and turn it out with a screwdriver. Or drill the center and use an easy out.

If you decide on the easy-out method then do it before attempting the screwdriver one - that one will make it a lot tougher to drill if you do it the other way around.

If you do the drill and eazy-out method then do the drilling with a left hand drill bit. You'd be amazed at the number of bolts which will spin right out with just the drill bit.

No, an Easy-out is a bolt extractor. You drill a small pilot hole through the center of broken bolt or stud. The bolt extractors then slip up into the pilot hole. They are either a square wedge shape or a curley-cue shape.

A tap is a male thread cutting device. You use it to either clean up existing threads or to cut new threads.

Using a tap is recommended AFTER removal of the broken piece.
