tomguy will know the answer to this.
I do believe that the engines are very similar in external dimensions. I suspect the bolt patterns are the same too but do not know. The 560 engine will be lighter with its aluminum block and more powerful. I would suspect some wiring harness issues. Tom W

Sort of. There's a fellow here who was putting a 560 into a 111 coupe.
You should change out the oilpan and oil filter setup for the parts from a sedan. The W107 hardware is unique and can be put to use by somebody. Aside from wiring issues, you'll have to keep the transmissions with the motor because of the different bellhousing shapes. -CTH |

If you are going to take the injection from the 560, you will need a 560 donor car for the fuel pumps, wiring harness, ECU, electronically controlled timing, etc. It would be a neat swap, but a huge amount of work. You might consider selling the 560 engine an buying another 450.

I got emailed the question too so I'll post the answer here:
Possible, yes. Easy, no. You'll need the whole longblock (engine and tranny). Most of the accessories should bolt up. The trans from a newer m117 (the 5.0 or 5.6) won't bolt up to a 4.5 (different bell housings). You'll need the fuel pumps from a 5.6 and you'll need to run dual fuel rails to the engine (remember, the 5.6 hs 2 fuel pumps not just 1). It has MFI so you'll need the whole injection system. In THEORY (assuming the heads weren't drastically changed) you might be able to use a 4.5's manifold, keep D-Jet, and nobody would be wiser to the swap. But only if the head's mounting to the maniifold didn't change (and it probably did). The exhaust manifold mounts bolt right up though.

I have the whole 1988 560SL to take the engine and transmission from. The SL was in a heavy hit.

W 111 motor transplant
I am following this thread because I am also thinking about a 560 engine into W111 chassis. Not looking to hotrod the car, but want smooth power and enough to be happy while driving this classic. Jim

It wouldn't be TOO hard as long as you have the donor car right next to you.

You don't say where you are located, but I have a good 1973 4.5 in a 450SE in southeast Wisconsin that I would sell reasonable.

I am in So Calif. I have tried to have my location show up next to my name, but it has not happened yet. Do you have the name of the Coupe that is having the 560 engine put in? Thank you all for the replies. Jim

5.6 Liter in a 280SEL 4.5?
Keep the 4.5 motor, they are cheap and plentiful. |
