tranny fluid pump, an easy reasonable fix

MB auto trannies often misdiagnosed as needing "rebuild" when it's just the tranny fluid pump that goes south, an easy reasonable fix.

DieselDog, tell us more. What does it take to renovate a tranny pump?

This was an issue with late 1970s cars especially, dunno if it touches yer 220Sb. Friend of mine running Autobahn Motors at Irvington NY circa late 1980's specialist/independent MB garage who bought/sold millions of Vintage MB's used to seek em out misdiagnosed with blown transmissions - knowing the prob was often the fluid pump and nothing more. Apparently tranny fluid circulation and pressure is key item. Fluid dont just sit in stasis but must circulate well for the tranny to shift right. And externally accessible tranny pump's the weakest mechanical link that nobody considers, bit of Vintage MB lore that oughta be passed around.

Otherwise am damned if i know where it's exactly located or how to replace the pump. Gettin used to my first MB automatic in nearly a decade these past couple weeks. The 116 kicks like a mule in between shifts without feathering the accelerator pedal.

At least it is not slipping.

If it is kicking some minor adjustments should do the trick.

Older cars had 2 pumps in the trans. One at the rear inside the rear cover and not bad to get at. The other pump is at the front and requires removal of the trans to replace-it is not rebuildable. Both of these pumps rarely fail.
