Towards putting the 6.3 on the road again
Well, it has been an interesting few months for me in Mercedesland.
First, the 300E was fatally overheated to the tune of a head gasket replacement. This was largely my fault, owing to a faulty aux fan and the wife's penchant for running the AC...in bumper to bumper traffic. The car ran great right up until I disassembled it...just like a Mercedes should. I however, screwed up when I reassembled it. Note to others, remember to reset the chain tensioner when putting it all together. It ran for like a half hour before the chain gave up. Ka Pow! Crunch! Ouch! Went out and bought a nice '84 300D, turns out to be a pretty nice car, especially with 4 fresh tires and an alignment. Plus this diesel is helping to reignite my desire to create a W111 coupe with a OM617, 5 spd and limited slip diff to take me skiing! So this weekend I put in a new chain to determine the extent of the damage. Of course, bent valves in cylinders 4 and 5. Well, at some point, you have to admit to yourself that you are NOT perfect and are bound to make mistakes and you have to stop beating yourself up forgive yourself and move on. I have, however, vowed to obtain a service manual for every car I own so that I can re-familiarize myself with procedures before operating. In order to cheer myself up I began working on the 6.3 project. This car has not driven since I drove it from Iowa to Colorado with a cracked head 6 years ago. This winter I obtained an ebay 6.3 parts car with a cherry motor and as it turns out, brand new air suspension valves (this car has been up without running for several months!) Step one was to remove the engine and transmission from the car. Big step. After a full days wrenching, including cutting out some of the front cowl, the engine and transmission is finally free of it's rusted out host and ready to be prepared for installation in it's new rust free home. Truly, after seeing this thing on my garage floor, I have no idea how it fit in the car in the first place. Furthermore, I have no idea how I'm going to get this swap done. But I feel good. I'll take my time and figure out and it will all be great. I'll let you know how it goes. P.S. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good rebuilt/reman head for an M103?

6.3 transplant into W111
Just curious, 6.3 engine because it was the best biggest, fastest engine from that time period? I would like to closely follow your thread as I am starting a restoration on a 65 300SE coupe. My engine is running so I hope to do everything else but the engine. Jim

Jim,
I'm afraid I may have confused you. I have a 6.3 with a dead motor and a 6.3 parts car. The conversion I would like to do at sometime in the future would be to put a 5 cyl turbo diesel with a 5 spd and a limited slip diff into a w111 coupe. This car would be great for getting to the mountains. However, the 6.3 into a w111 coupe conversion has been done, most notable by Karl Middlehauve. If you are not familiar with what he has done check out his website http://www.mbgrand600.com He is truly the m100 maestro! I most recently had a 220SEb coupe and loved the car. Good luck with your restoration.

This is a nice example of a W111 drag racer with a 6.3 liter engine.
