W116.120 taller gear recommendations

I'd like a taller gear in my SD...any recommendations? are all 116.xxx crown/pinion interchangable?

I would pass on the taller gear. This will adversely effect performance off the line. The high rpms on the highway do not adversely effect the engine. Plus your speedometer would be off.

I would change the gear ratio with no regrets if I wanted longer engine life and better fuel economy and didn't mind a little softer performance off the line.

Rather than change the ring and pinion I would change the entire center section. It is pretty easy to find used units, they are almost never worn out, and the labor to change it is not that bad.

I have paid about two hundred for a center section used, and labor was between two and three hundred at my indie.

Two different diff cases.....

for the car series you mentioned, you can source a diff from a W116, W123, W126, and R107 IF the donor car is an inline engine, and it's a plug and play operation. Your best bet is to find a 85 300D or 300SD with the 2.82(?) diff.

V-eights have a larger diff case. You can still interchange, but it's potentially more involved....

I recall it is a 1 liter case for the inlines, and a 1.3 liter case for the eights.
