280E Valve Stem Seals

It's time to adjust the valves on my 280E - 110 engine. I understand the valve stem seals can be replaced w/the head still on, but my question is: do the camshafts need to be removed to do this?

I think you need camshafts in place to pull valve springs one cyl at time as you work from one TDC combst chamber to another.

So is there enough room to remove the rocker arm while under the cam?

should be enough room trick is getting the daggon compression you need to replace seals. There are special tools, of which I do not own, but I was able to rig up a system to compress and remove. you will need air pressure to hold the valve in proper posistion to replace seals. This is a tedious process and if never done before on engine can be quite frustrating. The keepers have a tedency to stay put. good luck

The keepers are precisely what I am concerned about. Are they one-piece, and how do you get them off without scoring the valve stems?

two piece, once the spring is compressed lightly tap the stem and hopefully they will come apart and off. I used a magnet and a pair of surgical long stem forceps to grab them. Some came off easy, others did not. In hind sight I guess I could have squirted them with lock ease or such, but not sure if that would have helped
