116 door handle replacement

Anyone know book time for replacement of the driver's side door handle on a 116? I'm taking my 280SE in monday for that and a few other things...the handle broke just aft of the little hinge. I'm trying a new shop but their rate is $80 an hour, and if it's going to be something like 2 hours of time plus parts I may rethink it, i don't want to end up paying $200 for a door handle. These guys are supposed to be good though and I'm tired of shops doing more damage to my car than repairs. decisions, decisions.

Door Handle

I'm not sure if your talking about inside or outside handle-either way simple fix. I'm slow and my inside only took a few minutes. Save yourself some $$$. While your at it you can lube and clean window tracts etc...
Good luck and keep us posted.
Regards

It takes about a half hour, once you've done it once. If you do it, be careful with the door panel, they are not the simple press in clips.

It's the outside handle and I've never done it (well, on a Fiat). What's the trick to getting the door panel off? I really don't want to screw it up. Guess I'd better have a look at the manual huh.

If it is the outside handle I don't think you need to remove the inner door liner. I don't know about the W116 specifically but most M-Bs door handles come off from screws on the door jamb and can be changed in a few minutes. I know on the W123 (which is the same handle style) it took me about 15 minutes to replace one a few months back and that was the first one I ever did. I removed a screw or two, the handle slid back and pulled out, the new one slid in and the screw(s) went back on. 1-2-3 and it was done.

Just read the 116 manual page for door handles, and that seems to be the case. No door liner removal required.

OK so the next question is - maybe I can kill two birds with one broken door handle here. The passenger side lock is the wrong lock, which I've never had a key to fit. If I get a new assembly with lock from Mercedes for the driver's side, I'll have an extra lock - can I swap out the orphan lock from the passenger side with the old driver's side lock?

Weather or not the door panel needs to come off depends on how tight the philips screw is. There are 2 hex screws that come out after you remove the plastic plug but there is one philips screw that you can only get with the door panel off. If its loose the door handle will slide forward and come right out. If its too tight to remove the door handle though the door panel will need to come off.
