desperate for 108 4.5 fuel pump
hi folks -- finally broke down after four years of ownership and took my beloved 108 to an MB indie for a general look-over. I told him the fuel hoses at the tank were bad but he discovered the pump itself was leaking. Bought two(2!!) thus far online and each one runs when installed but does not pump fuel
Now my car has been sitting in the shop for six weeks (90 miles away) because of this fiasco. Old pump re-installed and still lets the car fire up. I can only find used 116 pumps online and my indie says they will not swap in even though the engine is still the M117. Anyone have a decent used pump, know of a reputable rebuilder, know of a rebuild kit, or know of an aftermarket swap which works? help! Stealership wants about $750 for a pump. TIA will post in "parts" also

Is this the big pump that looks like a wood router (as someone here mentioned)? If so, it might be worth your time to take it apart and see why it won't pump. They (again if it's the big wood router looking one) get crud from the fuel tank packed into a screen under the inlet fitting on the pump. Then the pump starves for fuel because there's a 1/2" deep wad of sludge packing into the inlet.
The pumps are simple inside, just a big bronze vane with a tiny little woodruff like key to lock it to the shaft of the pump. Fuel comes in, the vane pumps it up to the engine. A special spring loaded bronze seal keeps the fuel out of the electric motor, but you won't be in to the pump deep enough to disturb that area.

Are you sure it's not a blockage in the line? You say it doesn't pump fuel, was that checked at the pump or in the engine bay? Just making sure, these pumps are pretty hard to kill.
They are VERY expensive. But any D-Jet pump will work. This means the 3.5 and 4.5 used in the 108, 109, 111, and early 116 and 107s will all have the same pump. Of everything I have a spare of, a fuel pump is not one. A pump from a later 116 or 107 (with K-Jet) won't work.

I've got a Mercedes buddy here in southern CA who's got quite a few of the big pumps (if that's what yours uses). So if you can't get one of yours going, email me directly and I'll pass on his info. email: austinado16 at cs dot com

Doesn't Bosch sell these pumps on the Bosch website?

The pump is the size of an ignition coil, Todd. I don't think that's nearly router-sized! Too bad for KPB. Al, I think Bosch charges an arm and a leg too...

thanx for comments and ideas. just followed al's tip and scoured bosch site, can only find brake pads, O2 sensor and spark plug wires from them for a '72 4.5 108. Tomguy called it too I'll bet -- if they had it, would be many $$$
both new pumps refuse to send a drop as observed at the pump itself. the old leaking pump lets the car run so I must just bring it home so I can piddle with this on my own. I read the thread Todd mentioned with the "router" characterization. I do not think he believes it is as big as a router, just looks like one, but, I think that may be one which mounts vertically. Mine lays on its side beside the filter near the tank at the rear of the car.

E8145 is for the six banger -- they do not list one for a 108 4.5 only the 116 4.5, same engine, different pumps my MB indie says
I'll move on to Rock and try there

OK, looked at the advance site again just cuz I was thinking that Al knows cars and he knows a V8 from a 6. They do indeed list the very same pump for a "280SEL" with a 4.5 but they list it also for a "280SE" what I have, which only shows with a six banger. Cannot be the same pump for a 6 and an 8, can it?

Have a look at the following link to the Russian site showing the various pumps. A number of part numbers which may help narrow things a bit...
find the one that matches what you've got and then run the numbers on various sites out there... http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=108018&M=130%2E980&CT=F&cat=232&SID=47&SGR=001&SGN=01 |

Not at all.
You can always return it if it's the wrong type?

One simple question...did you get the wires crossed and make the pump run backwards?
