engine transpant in to a 1978 w123
Hi
Ive found a 1974 230/6 motor out of a w114 and want to know will it drop into my 1978 230/4 coupe. is it a streight swap ie will the mounts match up? good idea? How about a 1977 280/6 w123?? A good second hand motor is alot cheaper then a recon. I know but it needs a bit more pep. |

One of the possible interferences is the oil filter location, they are different between a W114 and a W123. 230/6 is an older engine style, going backwards to the finbacks. Never installed in a W123. 280/6 is a M110, and was installed in both W114 and W123 bodies. 1977 motor will be a direct swap, but you will need the driveshaft and trans linkage as well. Jim

I never knew there were 230 6cyl engine 1974 sedans. And is your 123 recipient coupe 4cyl 230E?
Probly the greatest thing I'd be worried about is shortening length of driveshaft to accomodate space in engine bay for 6 cyl engine, nevermind trans linkage hookups and other fiddly bits you'll want from donor car. Otherwise it's true there's massive incompatabilities between 114 and 123 engine swaps including accelerator linkage, muffler pipes, motor mounts and position of oil filter as mentioned. For what it's worth, many diesel nuts curse the fact that w123 engines m616 and 617 will not bolt straight across into earlier 115/114 chassis. |
