110 Camshaft-carriage Removal
Please the redundancy; this situation is right between Tech Help and Vintage MBZ.
The 110 engine on my '77 280E has started to weep a little oil between the head and the camshaft carriage, so it's time to replace the gasket. After researching the Mercedes maintenance library - which can be extremely confusing at times - I could sure use some plain-language advice from anyone who has ever removed the camshaft carriage. Thanks |

There are several posts on this job that you will find if you search on "cam box."
The short answer is that it is a MAJOR pain. You need to remove the rockers, chain tensioner, right hand cam sprocket, upper slide rail, guide wheel, and most of the head bolts. The damn thing is heavy! The Haynes manual 63025 has a good decription of the job. IMO, not worth doing for seepage. Wait until you need a valve job. Also, the gasket is nothing more than a thin piece of metal, and is probably not the cause of the seepage. Try re-torquing the head bolts first.

I like the idea of re-torquing the head bolts. Since it's due for a valve adjustment anyway, I'll do the re-torquing then. Thanks for the input!
Can all the head bolts be accessed from the top side of the camshaft carriage? |

It's been a while, but I believe so. There are 14 head bolts. One, on the left rear is outside the cam box.
There are also some smaller bolts in the chain galley that should be tightened.

if you do get the box off, be sure to take it to a machinist to verify that it is flat. Like a cylinder head, it needs to be machined.
