Hello to the Group,

Doesn't seem to be to much going on here in the vintage forum with summer season still in full swing. I haven't gotten to any of my Mercedes projects either. It's either too damn hot or raining but that's what you get living in the sub-tropics . I've driven the "Finny" for a month every day and the water pump went out leaking yesterday. Besides that It has been doing great. I still can't belive that these cars have a top speed of only 78mph. I run mine at 70 to 75 every day on my commute. I hear the engine screaming but I have no idea what RPM it is turning, so I hope I am not going to kill it by over revving it .
I wonder why, in a time when the speed limit was 70 on all major highways, Mercedes limited the top speed by design to 78
I think I may do a gear ratio change on this one as well.

The 280 is just sitting in the garage awaiting me to install the headliner and window seals....well I will get to it soon
Regards,
Bryan

As for me, vacation until the end of the month. But also, I have been working on the 280C engine, mainly unbolting and cleaning parts and then bolting them on the new engine. I am focusing on this car to avoid the problems associated with long-term sitting. Except for the emissions line re-route, no great or even interesting problems have come up.

However, I will soon be at the point where I pull the pan on the old engine to see why it won't turn so I can get the transmission and torque converter off. That should be good for some posts and maybe some new pictures.

Then in the fall, the 250C awaits with its 4-speed conversion. I think I have all parts now, but it also should generate some questions and comments.

I keep waiting for Christy to get back into her carbs and ignition. That will liven things up!

Chuck

its hot!

with heat index over 100, and rain on the other days its been way too hot to do anything, but I recently met a beautiful woman who loves the car, so I'll probably start working on it really soon! Actually for our first date she wants to take it out to the country for a picnic, so I predict a couple of all nighters coming up. I love it when I meet people who like the 190SL more than the AMG.

I haven't run into any more problems on my "summer project", since the steering gear. I've been out of town and we're leaving in the morning for Colorado (with the 190SL Group Convention in Leadville the following weekend), so I've been otherwise occupied.

What has happened to Christy??

Christy should be posting tomorrow. Her car has been stuck in limbo for a while.

As for me, I've been a bit busy. After giving lots of advice on rebuilding zeniths, I decided that it was time for me to do it myself. So, I went out and bought a 250/8 with a damaged cam, and a 4-speed, and a pair of sick carbs. I have rebuild a spare pair of carbs (at about 3 hours of time /week) and will soon swap out the old carbs for these "new" ones. All the while, my digital camera has been in play, recording ALL the work. This afternoon, I'm picking up a pair of manifolds that were dropped off at a shop for bead blasting. They will look VERY nice when powder coated and reassembled. At my current rate, I won't be done for several weeks. Afterwards, the car goes up for sale on ebay.

Group I haven't had to do much on my '72 250 since pullng out the right rear fender after a tangle with a hit&run Buick last March. Car's been running great! (Seems like the more battered and rusty it gets, the better it runs!)
I got to put pads, rotors and an exhaust system on a friends 1990 300E-2.6 last month. Lovely car but I noticed that his doors don't close with that 'Bank-Vault' thunk like the ones on my 250. I do wonder if Christy has made further progress or if her project will be handed down for future generations to finish. I picked up a free, side cover Mercedes 4 speed trans, probably from a 240D, at the Carlilse PA. import show last year. I may install it some day, in my nice 250C which is safe in my parents garage in Virginia Beach (At least until the next hurricane!)
Apolgies to Chuck....I had no idea that the trans in the 280S and 250C were different. I didn't jump on that car myself for lack of storage and the suspicion that the clutch/pedal linkup was different. I hope you can finish without hacking the tunnel and AC too much.
Happy Motoring, Mark
