Oil Filter Housing - Missing Gizmo - 72 450
This should be simple, changed oil today on the 72 450. (117 engine) when checking torque values for the bolt on the oil filter housing I noticed in my engine manual that there is suppose to be a compression spring type gadget that sits in the oil filter housing at the bottom of the oil filter. I suppose to keep the filter pressed upwards. Well mine is missing
Soooo, evidently has been running this way for how long who knows Is this OK, and if not where oh where does one find this, the manual does not have a part number Suggestions?? Will any spring work? I'll drink a beer and await your all knowing answers

I don't know the exact funciton of it but I would not run it very long without it. I might have a 240 or 300d cannister laying about. They spring could be the same. If it will help you please pm and I will get it to you.

Ron,
Any hardware store should have a spring which would work. It merely supplies a little force to ensure the upper rubber gasket/ring seats on the flange. It doesn't have to compete with oil pressure or anything. Use a metal flat washer between the spring and the filter cartridge to prevent the spring wearing into the metal of the cartridge. The correct tension should be when you push lightly down on the cartridge it pushes the cartridge back up above the level of the metal can. |
