74 450 SL Tach and Clock

In addition to the heater, has anyone done any repair work on the clock tach combination gauge in the 74 450? Neither of them work, but they are getting current.

6 out of 7 clocks I tried to repair worked fine after replacing the two large capacitors on the rear board. Not difficult if you can solder and (if you can stand the outrageous markup) available at Radio Shack. Note that you have to desolder the small ground pin at the rear before removing the clock assembly. There are pics somewhere here or via Google.

Did you mess with the tachometer at all when repairing the clock? It doesn't work either.

Would the clock in a 1987 SEC be the same as this one? My clock doesn't work either. Is it hard to get to? I've never attempted to remove the instrument cluster before.

It should be similar. There is a tutorial somewhere about, covering the removal and repair of our clocks.

As to how to remove the instrument cluster, I tend to just reach up from below and push forward on mine, but the "proper" tool looks a lot like a pair of coat hanger sections with 1/4" to 3/8" hook bent on one end of each.
When using the hooks, you slip them in beside the cluster on either end, turn them inward to hook on the edges, and pull back toward you.

Watch out that you don't disassemble one of the connectors on the back by accident, when removing them from the cluster. They add all sorts of entertainment to an otherwise relatively simple job, when you have to figure out which pin came out of which hole in the connector!
