wool carpet?

Can anyone tell me whether the carpeting in my '67 230S is wool? It sure seems like some kind of natural fiber based on the way it has aged over the years. Durability-wise it's great, all intact and no rips, but it has developed an ever so slight "hairy" look to it in the curved sections, such as over the tranny hump, which I've never seen in other loop carpeting. I like the carpets a lot but they are slightly faded and need a good cleaning. I've heard of using pressure washers but if these are wool then that seems too harsh! Last thing I want to do is make them nappy or more hairy or otherwise prematurely aged. Most of the brushes and cleaners I've seen in parts stores seem like they'd be too harsh and damaging.

I believe they were supplied with Wool Loop originally, while some SE/SEL W108/W109 and all W111W/112 came with Wilton Wool, at least the W111 Coupe/Cabrios were.

The replacement sets are typically synthetic (at least in the matching colors).

Todd,

Do you notice moths exiting the car when you open the door?

Jim

Haha, no, but this is Boston in the winter... nothing is alive out there. I don't really need to replace the carpet, just get the dirt out of it. Not sure what to do beyond vacuuming. I suppose I can get it wet, since it's been wet from shoes all these years and it hasn't effected it. I guess I'll start by removing it and hosing it down, then maybe some detergent or shampoo or something gentle. What did you do on your 108?

You could rent one of those rug doctor jobs and use the upholstery attachment. I've had good results using that on my late-model vehicles.

A trip to your local auto parts store will reveal quite a few carpet cleaning agents.
